Swedish music curator, DJ, promoter and festival producer living in Berlin and Stockholm. Works in the fields of contemporary electronic and experimental music.
In his first stumbling steps as a DJ and promoter in 2008, Johan Östman founded the Swedish promoter/DJ group Samlingen, soon leading the electronic music scene of Uppsala through a number of nights and with DJ appearances in other Swedish cities and at electronic festivals.
In 2010 Johan Östman joined the curatorial team of contemporary electronic music festival Volt held at Uppsala Concert Hall, taking on a leading programming role in recent years.
With financial support from the city of Stockholm, Johan Östman brought Samlingen to Sweden’s capital in 2012, hosting monthly live nights for experimental electronic music and visual arts (Samlingen på Landet 2012-2013).
With swift attention from Stockholm’s club scene, Johan Östman soon joined Stockholm prime club venues Under Bron and Trädgården with DJ residencies and takeover nights from 2013 and onwards.
In 2011 Johan Östman also joined the curatorial team of Norbergfestival, Scandinavias oldest festival for electronic and experimental music, leading to his current position of the festival’s program director in 2013.
Johan Östman has also guest-curated stages and nights at Way Out West festival, Swedish National Radio’s Art’s Birthday party, Sound of Stockholm contemporary music festival, Red Bull Music Academy’s Stockholm weekender, legendary experimental arts venue Fylkingen and more. In recent years he has worked in close relations with notable Swedish music institutions such as Elektronmusikstudion and in bilateral relations with international culture institutes, embassies and European festivals.
